The peaks here are named for what they look like — tower, tooth, spire — and what they look like is what the ice left behind.

Why here

Climb any ridge in the Tatras and the map starts speaking a plain, physical language. Turnia means tower. Wierch means peak — though one nearby is labeled gładki, smooth, as if the mapmakers wanted you to notice the difference. Czuby means tufts, for a line of small stone teeth strung along a ridge. These aren’t decorative names. Generations of people who lived under these summits named them for exactly what they saw, and what they saw was the leftover architecture of ice. During repeated ice ages, glaciers filled the hollows below these peaks and ground inward from every side at once, leaving pyramids where a mountain used to be, and paper-thin ridges where two glaciers nearly met. The Tatras are small next to the world’s great ranges, but they carry themselves like giants, because so much of their bulk was carved away rather than built up. This note follows that carving, peak by peak, tower by tower, reading the ice’s signature in stone that is still standing.

The story

The land came first, the way it always does. Long after the rock that makes up the Tatras was folded and lifted into a mountain range, ice ages arrived in waves, packing snow into the high hollows until it thickened into glaciers. Each glacier chewed at its own hollow a little more; where two or three glaciers gnawed at the same summit from different sides, they left a horn. Where they ran side by side, they shaved the rock between them down to an arête barely wide enough to stand on. When the last ice finally thinned and pulled back, it left a jagged, young-looking skyline behind: bare stone, snowfields lingering in shadowed pockets, and scree the frost had cracked loose but never carried away.

Into that terrain moved the Tatra marmot, a stocky, burrowing relative of the squirrel found nowhere outside these mountains. It lives in family clans on the upper slopes and alpine ground the ice uncovered, feeding hard through the short summer and disappearing underground for the long cold months, the way marmots everywhere do. Once hunted as a game animal, its numbers collapsed sometime in the eighteen-hundreds, and it is now one of the rarest vertebrates in Poland, strictly protected on both sides of the border.

Below, where the rock eases into forest and pasture, people settled the valleys around what is now the town of Zakopane — gateway to all of this, though the record stays quiet on who first climbed these peaks for reasons other than survival.

Kościelec

Kościelec rises as a single, steep-sided pyramid above the surrounding ridgeline, and the shape is not an accident. A summit like this is what’s left when three or more cirques — the amphitheater-shaped hollows a glacier scoops out at its head — eat into a mountain from different directions at once. As each hollow deepens, the ridges between them get thinner, until only a narrow apex survives at the center: a horn. Kościelec’s name echoes the Polish word for church, and once you’re looking for it, the steep-walled, tapering form does read like a spire built by something patient and enormous rather than something built to worship in. The approach climbs out of the valley floor on a marked path before the final stretch narrows into a scramble over broken rock — the same rock frost has kept breaking loose from the exposed faces long after the ice itself disappeared. From the top, the horn shape of neighboring summits becomes obvious in a way it never is from below: you can trace, peak by peak, where the ice worked hardest.

Look for

From partway up the final scramble, turn and look back at the ridge you climbed from. Find where it narrows to its thinnest point — that’s an arête, worn down from both sides at once by ice that no longer exists. Trace it with your eyes to the next pointed summit along the skyline; the pattern repeats.

Cubryna / Čubrina

Cubryna sits directly on the ridge that divides Poland from Slovakia, and its profile is as sharply triangular as Kościelec’s a valley away. Here the horn shape did double duty: cirques on the Polish side and cirques on the Slovak side worked toward the same summit from opposite directions, meeting at a ridge so narrow it now carries an international border along its crest. That’s the ordinary outcome of glacial erosion in a compact, heavily iced mountain range — when there isn’t much lateral room, opposing cirques converge quickly, and the divide between two countries ends up running along the same knife-edge that divides two drainage basins. Reaching Cubryna means committing to exposed scrambling along undulating rock with real drop on both sides, not a maintained trail in the ordinary sense. The reward is a horn peak seen from its own summit rather than across a valley: the drop-off on each side is close to vertical, and there’s no ambiguity left about how a mountain this narrow came to exist. Weather changes fast at this elevation and the exposure punishes hesitation, so this is a peak for a clear, settled day and a realistic sense of your own scrambling ability.

Look for

Stand at the summit and look down both sides of the ridge in turn. Notice how steep and similar the two faces are — that symmetry is the signature of two cirques cut from opposite sides toward the same point, rather than one glacier working alone.

Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Wielki / Veľký Mengusovský štít

Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Wielki anchors one end of a short chain of summits that share its name — separate high points along a single glacially sculpted massif rather than one mountain with several unrelated tops. That pattern, a cluster of closely spaced peaks instead of one broad dome, is what happens when a mountain gets carved by more cirques than it has room for. Ice worked in from several directions at once, isolating a series of narrow summits and leaving low saddles between them — crossable on foot, but exposed on both sides the whole way. The massif faces a set of glacially deepened valleys, the kind that once funneled ice outward and now funnel meltwater and weather instead. Climbing toward it, you pass through the zones the ice left behind in sequence: forest that returned first, then open alpine ground too rocky and short-season for trees, then bare rock the ice abandoned last. The approach is long, the final ridge exposed, and this is not a peak to attempt without real scrambling experience and settled weather. What you get in return is a close look at how a single glacial system can carve not one dramatic summit but a whole related family of them, still standing shoulder to shoulder along the ridge that divides them.

Look along the ridge in both directions from the summit and count the separate high points sharing this massif. Each one marks where ice cut deep enough from more than one side to isolate a summit of its own, rather than leaving one continuous ridge.

Gładki Wierch / Hladký štít

Not every summit in this range ends in a spire. Gładki Wierch — the name means, plainly, smooth peak — rises as a broader, more rounded shoulder than its jagged neighbors, and the difference is worth noticing precisely because it isn’t dramatic. Where Kościelec and Cubryna sit close to several cirque headwalls at once and got carved into narrow horns, a peak like this one sat slightly outside the busiest zone of ice convergence, shaped by fewer glaciers competing for the same summit. The result is a mountain that still shows plenty of glacial handiwork — steepened flanks, a rockier upper slope than anything below the treeline — without the knife-edge drama of its neighbors. Trails here are longer and gentler than the technical routes onto the horn peaks, following ridge terrain a confident hiker can manage without ropes, though the exposure and weather at this elevation still call for real caution. It’s a useful stop for comparison as much as for its own view: stand here and you can look across the valley at the sharper summits and see, in the difference, exactly how much rock those hollows removed to make something as pointed as a horn.

Compare this summit’s rounded profile with a horn peak visible across the valley. The gentler slope here is not the absence of glacial carving — it’s evidence that fewer cirques converged on this particular summit, leaving more of the original mountain shoulder intact.

Zamarła Turnia

Turnia means tower, and Zamarła Turnia is a small, isolated one — a narrow pinnacle of rock standing apart from the smoother ridgeline around it. Towers like this are usually what’s left when a section of an arête, already thinned to a blade by cirques cutting from both sides, gets further weakened by ice and frost working into cracks in the rock until whole slabs sheared away, leaving isolated, harder blocks standing alone. This is climbing terrain rather than hiking terrain: reaching or ascending a turnia in the Tatras generally means technical rock climbing, not a trail with a scramble at the top. That distinction matters for how you plan a visit here — this is a peak to view from a safe vantage or approach only with the right equipment and experience, not a casual add-on to a ridge walk. Even from a distance, though, the tower’s isolation tells the story plainly: everything around it that wasn’t hard enough to survive is gone, carried away as scree and boulders down into the valley below, and what remains is essentially a monument to which rock in this massif could take the punishment and which couldn’t.

Look for

From a safe distance across the valley, pick out the tower’s silhouette against the ridge behind it. Notice how little rock connects it to its neighbors — that isolation is the point: everything less resistant nearby has already been stripped away.

Kozie Czuby

Czuby means tufts, and Kozie Czuby is a run of small, separate high points strung along one ridge rather than a single summit. That segmented shape is a common outcome where an arête — already narrowed by two cirques working it from either side — gets cut across by smaller notches where frost has pried out weaker bands of rock. Instead of one continuous blade of ridge, you end up with a row of distinct points, each one a slightly harder knot of rock than what used to separate it from its neighbors. Traversing a ridge like this means constant short ups and downs rather than one sustained climb, with exposure on both sides for most of the distance. It’s a good place to notice how much, day to day, these mountains are still working on themselves: loose rock and small ledges along the crest show where pieces have broken away recently in geological terms, continuing a process that has been narrowing this ridge since the ice itself pulled back. Nothing about the ridge is finished; frost still does, in slow motion, roughly what the glaciers did faster.

Look for

Walking the ridge, notice how it rises and falls between distinct high points rather than following one smooth crest. Each dip marks a spot where a weaker band of rock has already broken away; each tuft marks rock that, so far, has held.

Kozi Wierch

Kozi Wierch means Goat Peak, and it earns the name honestly — the final approach follows an airy, narrow ridge that asks for a steady head rather than technical climbing skill. What makes it worth the exposure is the view it delivers: from this point on the ridge, you can see, in one sweep, the whole assembled evidence of ice at work across this part of the range — horn peaks standing apart from each other, the paper-thin arêtes connecting them, isolated towers where an arête has already failed, and gentler shoulders where the ice never converged as hard. Few single viewpoints in the Tatras put that much of the story in one frame. The peak sits along one of the range’s classic high-altitude ridge routes, walked by hikers experienced with exposure rather than technical climbers, and the trail itself is a lesson in glacial geography: it threads along the exact knife-edges the ice left thin enough to walk, avoiding the steeper faces the ice left too broken to cross without ropes. Weather on this ridge turns quickly, and the exposure means a clear, calm day matters here more than almost anywhere else on this list.

Look for

From the summit, turn slowly through a full circle and count how many distinct pyramidal peaks you can pick out on the skyline. Each one is a horn shaped the same way as the ground beneath your own feet — carved from more than one side until only a point survived.

Mnich

Mnich means Monk, and the name fits a peak that stands alone — a compact, steep-sided tower separated from the ridgelines around it rather than rising as part of one. Isolated summits like this are common near the floors of old cirques: where the ice that carved the surrounding hollow plucked away everything except one especially resistant knot of rock, that knot is left standing by itself once the ice and the softer rock around it are both gone. From below, a shape like this can look almost architectural, more like a single carved block than a mountain in the usual sense, and that’s a fair description of how it formed — less a peak that grew than a peak that got left over. Climbing Mnich is a technical undertaking rather than a hike; the same steep, compact form that makes it visually striking is what makes it a genuine rock climb rather than a scramble. Even without climbing it, the tower rewards a careful look from a safe distance: study how sharply its sides drop compared with the broader mountain shoulders nearby, and the difference in resistance between this rock and its now-vanished surroundings becomes easy to read.

Look for

From a viewpoint across the cirque, compare Mnich’s steep, compact outline with the broader slopes around it. The contrast in shape reflects a contrast in what the rock could withstand — this block simply outlasted what used to surround it.

When it's best

The high ridges in this note stay locked in snow and ice for a good part of the year, and the safe window for scrambling or climbing the horn peaks and arêtes is usually a stretch of summer — sometimes shorter after a heavy winter, sometimes longer after a light one, so it pays to check conditions rather than the calendar. Lower approaches and ridge viewpoints like Kozi Wierch open earlier and close later than the technical peaks, since less of their terrain depends on bare, dry rock. Even outside that window, the range rewards a visit: the horn shapes and arêtes are just as legible from a distance in a snow-covered month as they are underfoot in summer, arguably more so, since snow settles into the cirques and along the ridgelines and makes the contrast between carved and uncarved rock easier to read from any of the valley towns below.

The names behind what you saw

The pyramidal peaks in this note — Kościelec, Cubryna / Čubrina, Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Wielki — are what geologists call horns: summits carved into points where three or more glacial cirques (the amphitheater-shaped hollows a glacier scours out at its source) cut into a mountain from different sides at once. The narrow ridges connecting them, including the crest that carries Kozie Czuby, are arêtes — knife-edge ridges left standing where two cirques worked toward each other from opposite sides. Isolated towers like Zamarła Turnia and Mnich are what remains when a weakened section of ridge or cirque wall gives way and only a harder block of rock is left standing alone.

Regional bedrock maps register only two broad units across this ground — Mesozoic undifferentiated rock and Cenozoic sedimentary rock — a reminder that the fine-grained story of exactly which rock holds up which peak is coarser in the public record than the shapes themselves.
